How to Make Your Tarot Deck Yours

Over the years, I have read and heard many different methods. Some are simple; others involve long rituals, special prayers, and more steps than actually using the cards.
Let's start with the easy approach.
If you have a brand-new deck from a source you trust, there is usually no need to worry about cleansing it. The exception is when something feels wrong.
Perhaps you felt uncomfortable in the shop.
Perhaps the seller made you uneasy.
Perhaps the deck appeared in a strange way from someone you do not trust.
Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, pay attention to that feeling.
But if the deck is new and nothing feels suspicious, the easiest way to make it yours is surprisingly simple:
Keep it around you.
Look through the cards.
Shuffle them.
Read about them.
Use them.
The more time you spend with a deck, the stronger the connection becomes. Over time, the cards become a tool for your intuition and your inner self. They begin to reflect thoughts, feelings, and patterns that may have been hidden before.
If you mainly read for yourself and occasionally for a friend, there is usually no need for elaborate rituals or constant cleansing.
Your energy is already present.
The cards live in your home.
You use them regularly.
The connection develops naturally.
In my experience, the relationship grows through use, not through ceremony.
What Happens When Other People Touch Your Deck?
This question comes up a lot.
My answer is:
It depends on what we mean by "many people".
If you have strong energy and good boundaries, having a few people touch your cards each day is usually not a problem.
When I read for clients, I often let them pick their cards.
I shuffle the deck.
They select the cards.
Simple.
What I don't like is when people start handling the whole deck. Some clients pull the cards together, lift the entire deck or begin moving it around without asking. It happens so quickly that sometimes I cannot even find the right words to say no.
When this happens, I usually take the deck back naturally and continue the conversation while shuffling. The client may not notice anything unusual. But I certainly do.
Think of your deck as an extension of yourself.
If someone touches your arm, nothing happens.
If someone pushes past your personal boundaries, your energy changes.
The same principle applies here.
Most contact isn't a problem.
Occasionally, however, a person leaves behind an energy that doesn't feel right.
How I Cleanse My Cards
Everything starts with you. Before you do anything with the deck, bring yourself back into balance.
Sit quietly.
Meditate.
Clear your mind.
Reconnect with your own energy.
If you work with crystals, hold one that resonates with you.
For me, that's a small amethyst pyramid.
Nothing impressive.
Nothing expensive.
Just a crystal that feels right for me and has been part of my practice for years.
Once you feel calm and centred, hold the deck between your palms.
Focus on reconnecting with it.
Let your energy flow through the cards.
Simple.
Afterwards, if there is sunshine available, place the deck on a windowsill and rest your crystal on top. For those of us living in Scotland, sunshine can occasionally be a rare luxury. In that case, an unscented white candle works just as well. The important thing is your intention and your presence.
When Cleansing Doesn't Work
This is the question people rarely ask.
What happens if the deck still doesn't feel right?
Sometimes a beloved deck starts giving confusing readings.
The connection feels weaker.
Something feels off.
If that happens and the deck is important to you, don't rush to throw it away. Put it aside. Store it safely. Leave it for several months. Buy another deck if you wish and continue working. Then one day, return to the old deck. You may discover that the connection has returned. Or you may realise something else. You may have simply outgrown it. There is nothing wrong with that. Not every tool stays with us forever.
Sometimes a deck walks beside us for years.
Sometimes it teaches us what we need to learn and then its work is done.
Keep it as a memory if you wish.
Or let it go.
And if the thought of touching that deck again makes you uncomfortable, don't feel guilty about throwing it away. You haven't failed. You haven't offended the cards. You have simply reached the end of that part of your journey.
A spiritual tool is meant to support your growth.
If you have outgrown it, be grateful for what it taught you and move forward.
Because the real magic wasn't only inside the cards.
The real magic was always the connection you built with them.
