How to Guide Yourself in Meditation

Can you guide yourself in meditation?

Absolutely. In fact, many people do it naturally without realising it. The problem is not whether you can guide yourself. The problem is that nobody teaches you how.

Everything starts with intention.

Think about your weekly shopping. Most people don't walk into a supermarket completely blind and hope for the best. Even if you don't write a shopping list, you usually have one in your mind.

Meditation is no different. Before you begin, you need answers to three simple questions:

What?

How?

When?

What?

This is the most important question. What would you like to achieve?

Would you like to meet your power animal?

Connect with an angel?

Find clarity?

Find a solution to a problem?

Understand yourself better?

Most people rush into meditation without knowing what they are looking for. Then they wonder why they don't receive anything useful. Your intention is the direction of your journey. Without it, you're simply wandering. With it, you know where you're trying to go.

How?

This is the technical part.

You need the right environment.

If you struggle to meditate at home, I recommend reading my article about How to Clean a Room for Meditation. You need a space where you feel safe, comfortable, and energised.

Before meditation, I usually recommend:

A white unscented candle

Frankincense, sandalwood, or sage

Suitable meditation music

A clear intention

One mistake many people make is leaving the music until the last minute. Don't.

Sometimes it takes days to find music that truly supports the intention of your meditation. When you find music that works, save it. Build your own collection. Then, when the time comes, you can choose the piece that feels right in that moment.

If you are a visual person, write your intention down and place it in front of you. Seeing the words can help strengthen your focus.

Some people like to take this one step further. They write their intention on a piece of paper and burn it before meditation. If you choose to do this, please do it safely. Use a glass or metal bowl. Keep water nearby. Light the paper from your white candle and allow it to burn completely. When the paper has turned to ash, close your eyes and begin your meditation.

Going Deeper

Now you need to enter a deeper meditative state. One of the easiest ways is to imagine yourself in a place where you naturally feel peace.

Perhaps a beach.

A forest.

A mountain.

A garden.

Anywhere that feels safe and calm.

The second method takes you deeper into your unconscious mind. Imagine a door in front of you. Open it. Beyond the door is a staircase. Slowly walk down. Count each step.

One.

Two.

Three.

All the way to ten.

When you arrive, look around. What do you see?

Perhaps there is another door.

A symbol on the wall.

A room waiting to be explored.

This is where your meditation begins to unfold naturally. You can continue deeper or step into the room connected to your intention. Sit down. Observe. Listen. Allow the answers to find you.

One Intention at a Time

People often ask ten questions and wonder why they receive confused answers. Always work with one intention at a time.

One question.

One journey.

One destination.

You'll receive far more clarity this way.

When?

Practically speaking? Meditate when you have time and know you won't be disturbed. There is nothing more frustrating than finally reaching a deep state and being interrupted by a ringing phone or a family member asking where the scissors are. 😄

Spiritually speaking? You can work with natural cycles.

Many people use moon phases to support their intentions. Others use astrology when planning deeper spiritual work.

These can be wonderful tools if they already form part of your spiritual practice.

Can You Meditate with Other People?

People often ask whether they can meditate with a partner, friend, or child. Generally speaking, yes.

If your intention is personal, I recommend meditating alone.

If your goal is shared, meditating together can be incredibly powerful.

However, make sure your intentions genuinely align. If you are working towards the same outcome, your energies support one another.

If not, things become much more complicated. Think of two horses pulling a carriage. If they pull together, the carriage moves smoothly. If one wants to go left and the other wants to go right, the carriage goes nowhere.

Meditation works in much the same way.

Keep It Simple

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that spirituality is not separate from common sense.

Yes, ask for guidance.

Yes, invite support.

Yes, explore your spiritual gifts.

But always keep your mind clear and grounded. Spirituality is logical. The clearer your intention, the clearer your journey. And the clearer your journey, the easier it becomes to hear the answers waiting for you.

✨ What intention would you bring into meditation today?
