Why do people seek spiritual guidance?

Long before the first Tarot deck was printed, people were looking for answers. They used pebbles, sticks, shells, bones and signs from nature to understand what lay beyond their immediate knowledge. Most tribes had a spiritual leader, shaman, oracle, healer or wise woman who advised leaders, treated illness and helped people navigate uncertain times.

Looking back from the modern world, it is easy to dismiss these practices as superstitions. I think that would be a mistake.

These people lived in a world where survival depended on understanding both the physical and spiritual aspects of life. Knowledge of plants, healing, human behaviour and spiritual practice was often passed from one generation to the next within the same families.

Life was uncertain.

Harvests could fail.

The weather could change everything.

Conflict could threaten a community.

People sought guidance because they felt vulnerable. If we're honest, that hasn't changed much. The questions have changed, but vulnerability remains.

Today we worry about relationships, careers, health, finances, purpose and whether we are making the right decisions. We still seek answers when life feels uncertain.

What fascinates me is that our ancestors often understood something many people have forgotten.

They understood how to ask. People did not go to their spiritual leaders expecting a magical performance. They came with concerns, fears and specific questions.

They wanted to know whether an alliance could be trusted.

Whether a journey was wise.

Whether a harvest would succeed.

Whether a choice carried risk.

They participated in the process. Modern fortune-telling is often treated very differently.

Some people arrive expecting to sit silently while the reader somehow reveals every detail of their life.

They see it as a test.

I see it as a conversation.

Guidance is a cooperation between the seeker and the reader. You bring your concerns to the table. The reader brings experience, intuition, symbolism and interpretation.

Together, a connection forms.

People who work with Tarot or other forms of guidance are often highly sensitive. Constantly picking up emotions, intentions and energies can become overwhelming. Every reader learns, sooner or later, that boundaries are essential. Without them, they would absorb everything around them.

But even the most gifted reader cannot do your part for you. The quality of the reading depends not only on the reader but also on your willingness to engage with the process.

Perhaps that is the lesson our ancestors understood better than we do.

The cards are not there to think for you.

They are there to help you think more clearly.

The answers may be hidden in the cards, but finding them begins with asking the right questions.
