How to Use Crystals for Meditation

I used to think I was the only person in the world who loved crystals, pebbles, and rocks. As a child, my whole world was my family, and I was the odd one who constantly picked things up from the ground.
I was only three years old when I found a large brown pebble beside a lake while we were on holiday. There was nothing particularly beautiful or valuable about it. To anyone else, it was just a stone.
To me, it was special.
By the end of the holiday, I had collected several kilograms of pebbles and rocks. My parents made it very clear that they were not carrying all of them home across the country with three children and a suitcase, so I had to choose. I chose that one large brown pebble. I kept it until adulthood.
Years later, I discovered I wasn't alone. Many people feel naturally drawn to crystals and stones. Even children are often fascinated by them long before anyone explains what they are.
So why does this happen?
Why Do We Use Crystals?
Every crystal carries its own unique frequency of energy. That energy interacts with your own energy. The stronger your attraction to a crystal, the stronger the connection is often likely to be.
Even two crystals of the same type can feel different. They may look similar, yet carry slightly different energies. This is why one crystal may feel wonderful in your hand while another of the same variety simply doesn't resonate with you.
Crystals can influence the energy around us as well as the energy we bring into meditation. They can support intentions, encourage balance, and help create the energetic environment we wish to work with during meditation.
Choosing a Crystal
The best way to choose a crystal is to hold it. Pick it up from the shelf. Place it in your palm. Sit quietly for a moment and notice how it feels. Allow your energy and the crystal's energy to interact. This is one reason I enjoy choosing crystals in person whenever possible. It allows you to connect with them before bringing them home.
However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with ordering crystals online. Those crystals still possess their own unique healing energy. They simply require a little more personal attention at the beginning as you build your connection with them.
Do Crystals Need Cleaning?
This is a topic that often becomes far more complicated than it needs to be. I have seen many elaborate and expensive methods for cleansing crystals.
My experience is much simpler. A crystal can often care for itself. If you are the only person using it and it is not being heavily worked with, simply leave it on your shelf. In most cases, it will be perfectly fine.
However, if many people handle a crystal, particularly one used during healing work, I recommend cleansing it.
My preferred method is to place the crystal under running water and then leave it on a windowsill to dry and absorb sunlight. Living in Scotland, we know sunshine cannot always be guaranteed! Fortunately, a crystal does not require a blazing summer day. Even a gentle touch of sunlight can help refresh its energy.
If sunshine is not available, I use a meditation-based cleansing method.
Place the crystal in one palm and cover it with the other. During meditation, draw clear energy into your body through your crown chakra and allow it to flow through your palms into the crystal.
Repeat this process three times, or for as long as it feels necessary.
Trust your intuition. You will often know when the crystal feels clean.
Using Crystals During Meditation
There are many ways to use crystals during meditation. The first thing I want you to know is this: Your crystal already knows what to do. You do not need to outsmart it.
If you have a favourite crystal, simply hold it in your palm during meditation. Allow the crystal to work alongside your energy and support whatever you need most in that moment.
If you have a specific intention, choose a crystal that resonates with that intention. For example, if you are seeking clarity while searching for a better job, you might hold a clear crystal in one hand and a green aventurine in the other to support luck and opportunity on your journey.
If using two crystals, allow their intentions to complement one another. I recommend holding one in each hand rather than placing both in the same palm.
You can also place a crystal directly in front of you beside your meditation candle. Watch the candlelight dance across the crystal's surface as your thoughts begin to settle. Eventually, your eyes may soften and close naturally, allowing you to move more deeply into meditation.
Hold your intention, trust the crystal, and allow the guidance to emerge.
Trust Yourself
Of everything I could tell you about crystals, this is perhaps the most important. Always listen to the person who knows you best. Yourself.
Use the crystals that feel right to you.
Trust the connection you feel.
Your intuition is often wiser than any book, chart, or guide. The crystal may support the journey, but your inner wisdom will always be your most important guide.
Do you remember the first crystal or special stone you ever found or owned?
