THE COMPETENT WOMAN’S TRAP

When a woman is good at everything,

people stop checking if she’s okay.

Competence becomes a trap.

Reliability becomes a burden.

Strength becomes the mask she can’t take off.

For years, I lived inside that mask.

I was the last one on my own list.

I carried the remorse of not being enough for my children,

not being enough for my husband,

not being enough for my work.

Always forgetting something.

Always catching up.

Always holding everything together.

So I built efficiency like armour.

Every day scheduled.

Every minute accounted for.

Every task done before anyone noticed it needed doing.

And because everything ran smoothly,

people assumed it was effortless.

“You’re amazing.”

“I envy you.”

“You do everything so well.”

But no one saw the cost.

No one saw the exhaustion.

No one saw the woman who never stopped for herself.

And when I finally crashed —

when my heart gave out before I did —

even then, I was told I was “being difficult.”

This is the truth behind so many working women’s lives:

they’re not overwhelmed because they’re weak.

They’re overwhelmed because they’ve been carrying more than anyone sees.

Maybe it’s time we stop praising women for coping

and start asking what they need.
